Night excursion to a mine in Abruzzo

JOURNEY INTO HISTORY: Night Hike from the Village to the Ancient Bitumen Mine

The Maiella, an Abruzzese mountain considered sacred and called the mother mountain, was, for just over 100 years, from 1840 to 1956, the scene of a fascinating history that changed the fate of many women and men. The bituminous limestone rock mines became, during those years, the economic certainty for many families. Many sacrifices under the tunnels dug into the mountain's belly provided work and dignity to the miners who saw a glimmer of hope beyond their lamp in the darkness of the underground.

Our adventure begins in one of the miners' towns, Lettomanoppello, where men wrote many pages of history on the stone of the Maiella. We find it carved on the walls of the village with its unique stone murals along our route to reach the ancient Miners' Path.

Equipped with helmets and headlamps, we will set off at sunset from the center of the Stone City and reach the easy Miners' Path that will quickly lead us to the Santa Liberata Mine.

We will explore the first galleries dug by the miners and listen to their incredible stories of life lived in the heart of the Mother Mountain!
